Course Description:
This course will focus on the history, politics and economics of globalization from the scramble for Africa to US interventionism in Latin America. We will also look at the role, and lack of International Agencies.
Course Skills:
Critical reading and thinking skills, analytical skills, research methods and skills and listening techniques.
Method of Instruction:
Each topic will be introduced in a lecture format with additional background knowledge given. Students will be required to do additional reading and research outside of class. Discussions will be both student and teacher led. Assignments will be done individually as well as groups.

- Geography- Realms, Regions and Concepts, 15th Edition - Harm de Blij & Muller & Nijam.
- African History – A Very Short Introduction - John Parker and Richard Rathbone.
- Additional historical documents and journals.
Assessments/Major Assignments:
- Students will be assessed on a critical analysis of historiography.
- Students will be assessed on an argumentative essay.
- Students will be responsible for presenting an assigned topic in class.
Instructor:
Tom Macfarlane has a BA (Hons) in American Studies from the University of Liverpool as well as postgraduate qualifications from Golders Green College and the University of Middlesex. He has been teaching high school level courses for 5 years at the HSEFZ International Department.
