课程介绍

Course Description: 
This course will introduce students to the 5 branches of philosophy: ethics/morals, aesthetics, logic, epistemology, and metaphysics. An emphasis on questioning, group discussions, and philosophical argumentation/debate
will equip students with a broad understanding of the field of western philosophy.

Course Skills: 
Discussion, Speaking, Writing, Critical Thinking, Argumentation/Debate

Method of Instruction: 
An introductory lecture for each theory will be presented, followed by both large group and small group discussions. Discussions will be both student led and done in cooperative learning groups, with assignments done
individually, as well as in groups. Students will be expected to read and complete other work outside of class.

- Excerpts from Bentham & Mill’s theory of Utilitarianism
- Excerpts from Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason
- List of logical fallacies and debate methods
- Cartesian Skepticism and epistemology in Discourse on the Method
- Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and other metaphysical questions
- Video supplements from Crash Course: Philosophy

Assessments/Major Assignments:
- Presentation of an aspect of a philosophical theory covered in class.
- Group debate/Individual Arguments on philosophical questions.

Instructor:
Michael Y has a BA in English Literature and Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He has been teaching high school level courses for 8 years, and is a certified American teacher at the HSEFZ International Department.
