Course Description:
This course will focus on the American short story from modern 20th century literature. The texts will focus on the work of three authors: Hemingway,Faulkner, and Salinger. Critical literary analyses will be used for each text and a deeper
understanding of the guiding principals of each author will be explored. The relationship between the three authors will provide a background for understanding early modern American literature.
Course Skills:
Critical reading skills, developing an analytical approach to literature,and putting literature in a historical context.
Method of Instruction:
An introduction to each new author will be presented in a lecture, and discussions will be both student led and done in cooperative learning groups. Assignments will be done individually, as well as in groups. Students will be
expected to read and complete other work outside of class.

- A Rose for Emily & Dry September by William Faulkner
- A Perfect Day for Bananafish, The Laughing Man, and For Esme by JD Salinger
Assessments/Major Assignments:
- Critical analysis of theory and themes presented for each author.
- Students will be responsible for presenting one of the assigned readings in class.
Instructor:
Michael Y has a BA in English Literature and Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He has been teaching high school level courses for 8 years, and is a certified American teacher at the HSEFZ International Department.
