Introduction
Why do economies grow, and why do they sometimes fail in a disastrous way? This course will help you to understand the economic cycles the world and different regions go through, the causes of successful economies, and some of the ways that markets have collapsed. This course will look at historical and recent economic events which have impacted the world, both locally and globally. Overall trends will be considered and a number of case studies will be used to provide insight into the many factors causing economic success and failure.
Objectives
At the end of this course you will be familiar with concepts related to macroeconomics and be able to understand long and short-term patterns of growth and decline. You will understand causes of economic growth and of economic collapse. You will also be able to understand and explain cause and effect and be better at explaining complicated events in English.
Syllabus:
•Economic development – how local and global economies have grown and changed
•Miracle economies – times and places where growth has been dramatic
•Economic bubbles including Tulipmania, Wall Street Crash, Subprime Mortgage Crisis, Dotcom Boom, and cryptocurrencies.
•Ways in which governments and organizations respond to economic changes.
Assessment
Mid-course test, participation in class, and a brief presentation.
